Digitalization is increasingly permeating both public and private life and blurring boundaries between industries. With about 14 billion IoT connections in 2021, this number is predicted to double by 2025. IoT devices require robust and safe material solutions, such as materials with good signal transmission, transparency for sensors, heat management for power source, disinfectant resistance, being fancy indoor or weather-resistant for outdoor use.
In the past applications had to fulfill functions. Now they must do more. Saving energy by smart temperature or light control in your home, smart solutions for connecting electric cars to the grid or improving traffic, saving water resources with the help of smart connected sensors and watering in agriculture or robotics that make complex logistics easier are just a few examples for connected devices.
On the one side applications are expected to make intelligent choices and exhibit a good user interface that makes product intuitive. For this smart CMF design combined with cutting-edge technologies offers various opportunities. But also sustainability already needs to be integrated in product developments right from the very beginning. By using resources wisely & responsibly (recycled materials, biobased, mass-balanced raw materials) the CO2 footprint of the product will be low and following the guidelines of “design for sustainability” truly smart products with added value for people and planet can be realized. This makes the “Internet of Things” an “Intelligence of Things”.
