For most oil-in-water moisturizer formulations, try to keep the total emollient phase under 10% (viscous emollients <3%). The optimal oil phase typically is a blend of low molecular weight, high spreading, quick absorbing emollients combined with emollients that provide a coated, soft skin feel.
Suggested light/medium emollients include:
(Click EU next to product for listings available in Europe.)
- Cyclomethicone D5
- Myritol 318 (Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride-BASF) (EU)
- Cetiol SenSoft (Propylheptyl Caprylate-BASF) (EU)
- Schercemol 318 Ester (Isopropyl Isostearate-Lubrizol) (EU)
Cushion emollients to try include:
(Click EU next to product for listings available in Europe.)
- Schercemol DID Ester (Diisopropyl Dilinoleate-Lubrizol) (EU)
- Ceraphyl 847 (Octyldodecyl stearoyl stearate-Ashland) (EU)
An easy way to reduce the oily skin feel of an existing formulation is to add Dry Flow PC (Aluminum Starch Octenylsuccinate-Akzo Nobel). Dry Flow PC can be easily incorporated into the oil phase of an emulsion. In both aqueous and anhydrous products, Dry Flow PC will reduce the perceived oiliness of formulations, leaving a soft, dry feel on skin. Typical use levels are 1-2%.
Other oil absorbers to consider include:
(Click EU next to product for listings available in Europe.)
- Poly-Pore (Allylmethylacrylate Crosspolymer-Amcol Health and Beauty Solutions) is a 20-40 micron powder that can absorb up to 12grams of oil per gram of powder or 7-8 g/g of water. It also has a surface area of >150 m2/g.
- Dow Corning 9701 (Dimethicone/Vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer (and) Silica-Dow Corning) (EU)
- Hubersorb 600 (Calcium Silicate-JM Huber) is a 8 micron synthetic calcium silicate that can absorb 4.75 grams of oil per gram of powder and has a surface area of 250m2/g and can absorb up to 4 grams of oil per gram of nonpolar low viscosity oils
- Sipernat 22S (Hydrated Silica-Evonik) is a 13.5 micron particle that can absorb 2.4 grams of oil per powder and has a surface area of 190 m2/g
