Silicones have gotten a bad rap recently because of the D4, D5 and D6 regulation in wash-off products. Silicones are actually highly diverse and can be manipulated to create all sorts of intermediaries and derivatives. They are highly functional and adaptable, making them fantastic for cosmetic formulations.
In addition to being vegan friendly, hypo-allergenic, colorless and odorless, they also have amazing sensory properties.
In this video, you’ll discover:
- The benefits of using silicones in cosmetic formulations
- Their types and characteristics

It is so great that you published this article.
Keep them coming.
We love formulating with Silicones as they ate unmatched for many attributes.
Thanks Paul, happy formulating!
Awesome video! Thanks for publishing it! Indeed finally a great unbiased silicone presentation. We are a company with deep roots in natural and organic, but due to silicones very high safety and versatility, we do incorporate minimal amounts of it into our plant-based formulations. This video helps us with clear statements and a scientifc base to defend our beliefs when we are “attacked” by eco-retailers with dogmatic precepts.
Thank you, happy formulating!
Kind regards,
Belinda Carli
This was great! Very helpful !
What silicone would you recommend to add to a SPF Body cream that will help reduce whitening effect and dry down time so there is no greasy after feel?
To be able to answer this properly, I’d need to review your formulation, what other functional materials are present and especially the UV filters you’ve used. We have a formulation review service to assist with that, please visit this page: https://personalcarescience.com.au/Advice/cosmeticformulation,brandadvice-797/
Well done video, congratulations.
Be aware that you have now the possibility to get silicones made from renewable raw material which are 100% fossil free silicone.

Awesome video Belinda, congratulations!
Thanks Luciana, happy formulating!
Another great educational video! I am a believer in silicone base formulations. The feel and spreadability is wonderful and very easy to use. Unfortunately many people have fallen victims to the internet misinformation. Good for us in that we can expand product lines and offer options. I am starting to work with Cetiol Ultimate, very nice!
Thanks for watching, happy formulating!
Thanks Belinda. I really appreciate this video.
I was questioning the silicones. I also question polysorbate 20 and 80. I have a formula that polysorbate 20 is used to emulsify glycerin into the oil phase. Being used is 32% carrier oil, 2% watermelon oil, 3% Shea butter, watermelon extract( oil soluble). 5%polysorbate 20.
1)The question is is there something I can use to substitute the polysorbate 20 for something natural?
2.)Also used is silica dimethyl silylate 2.2% is this ingredient safe? It is used to thicken the oils and polyols and suspend the oil particles, increases gloss.
Is this a safe product? Is there a NATURAL ALTERNATIVE
