New developments in makeup formulation have consumers looking at their packed daily schedule and thinking, “no sweat!” Sweat-proof makeup allows users to go from day to night, from exercise to work – even a dip in the pool won’t mar these formulas.

Watch the video below to see how different water-based products perform in wash-off tests:

  • liquid foundations
  • bronzers
  • powdered eyeshadows
  • lipsticks
  • mascara

    Hello Belinda Carli,

I enjoyed your video and article. Thanks,

I have one concern Will Sweat proof product will clog the human skin pores ? Skin is breathable organ and I am afraid ” from day to night, from exercise to work ” sounds like 24 hour wear products will have probability clog the human skin pores causing damage to perform the skin function.

Please let me know your thoughts.

    Sincerely,

    Arvind

    Hello,

I’m not in agreement with the seat-off benefits that you claim.

My reason is simple, we sweat from the inside, thus the products that you demonstrated were sprayed with water on the top layer and not naturally as it escapes from the pores. Have you tested the products during exercise?

Please let me know as we have been trying to develop a topical bronzer that will not run or streak during exercise.

I look forward to your comments.

    Thank You,
    Stacy Kaufman

Hi Arvind, part of this needs to be tackled with the film former you select; I have chosen ones that provide a breathable film for the skin. And of course, it also relies on the user removing make-up at the end of each day, so it is not worn 24 hours, but potentially a good 12 hours without wearing. When developing these types of products make sure you test them carefully on various skin types to check for any undesirable clogging – you may need to alter some of your lipids too, so they don’t add to the potential for clogging. Just means allowing extra time in development, especially the evaluation stage. Luckily, we have access to so many different polymer and film forming materials these days, you will be able to find materials that give that balance of longevity of wear without causing pore clogging or other skin issues. Hope this helps, Belinda.

Hi Stacy, the Antaron (Ganex) I used in the liquid products and magnesium stearate/zinc stearate input for powders still works with sweat. I am a Latin dancer in my spare time and they work just as well after a big night of dancing as they did when diving in the pool! For mascaras and eyeliners, these are more affected by water dripping from sweat and still just as effective when I’m dancing. For lipsticks/glosses, they too are more affected by saliva than sweat or swimming. Please try the materials I have mentioned in this video as I have used them in products for dancing with equal sweat-proof results. I hope this helps, Belinda.
