Cosmedia® SP (EU) from BASF is one of the top material searches in the Prospector search engine. What makes this product so popular with formulators? Check out my description below, which includes product details, claimed benefits and applications.
What is Cosmedia® SP?
Cosmedia® SP (sodium polyacrylate (EU)) is a swellable carbomer (EU) type of pre-neutralized homopolymer that stabilizes suspensions and thickens. It forms a compact gel structure which can also trap oils, helping to stabilize oil-in-water emulsions even without the use of emulsifiers. Cosmedia® SP, however, is very sensitive to salt, like most carbomer-type thickeners (EU). The product is a fine power that is easy to disperse and thickens between a PH of 6-12. It claims to have better skin feel than other carbomers.
Key claimed benefits
- Very efficient and cost effective. A 1% dispersion in water has a viscosity of 85-110K cps.
- Can produce oil in water crème gel type formulations without needing additional emulsifiers. The emulsifying ability is independent of oil polarity. Typical emulsions have particle size of 4 to 9 microns.
- Good skin feel.
- Easy to use, can be added to oil or water phase.
- UV stable.
- Can tolerate up to 30% Ethanol.
- Can process hot or cold.
