Vantage Specialty Ingredients is pleased to present PFJ™-S Beads, a next generation natural exfoliant for use in beauty and personal care products. It is the latest addition to Vantage’s collection of Desert Whale Jojoba natural exfoliants — biodegradable, sustainable alternatives to Polyethylene (PE) beads

The Polyethylene Bead Problem

PE beads, or plastic microbeads, have been widely used around the globe in a variety of beauty and personal care products such as cleansers, scrubs and body washes in order to provide gentle yet effective exfoliation. However, awareness and concern about their damaging impact on the environment is growing. They are able to pass from bathroom drains through the filters of a wastewater treatment plant and into the sewer system, eventually flowing into our rivers, lakes and oceans. PE beads are not biodegradable; they remain in the environment as a pollutant, are consumed by fish or other marine animals, and then passed along in the food chain.

Response to the Problem

In response to the growing pollution problem caused by PE beads, campaigns against their use in beauty and personal care have been launched by various environmental groups. In addition, legislation in various countries around the world has recently been passed, such as the US’s Microbead-Free Waters Act of 2015, which will ban the sale of beauty and personal care products containing PE beads in the coming years.

The Desert Whale Jojoba Solution

Exfoliation is an essential part of any skin cleansing regimen, and physical exfoliants like PE beads increase the effectiveness of cleansing products. For beauty and personal care companies searching for alternatives to PE beads, Vantage offers a full range of Desert Whale Jojoba exfoliants which are natural, sustainable and biodegradable. Its latest addition to this collection, PFJ-™S Beads, was created in response to the demand for natural exfoliants that provide similar efficacy and skin feel to that of PE beads while being cost-effective.

PFJ™-S Beads is made with Jojoba Esters derived from natural wax esters that are extracted from seeds of the jojoba plant, a shrub native to the Sonoran Desert of the US and Mexico. Key benefits of PFJ™-S Beads and other Desert Whale Jojoba natural exfoliants include:

• Natural alternative to PE beads • Sustainable, biodegradable
• Made with environmentally friendly, natural jojoba wax esters
• Provides gentle yet effective exfoliation
• Gentle enough for daily use
• Polishes away dead skin cells, dirt and impurities
• Leaves skin smoother, softer, more supple
• Improves skin’s texture
• Instantly reveals brighter complexion
• Available in a variety of sizes

From Saving the Whales to Saving the Oceans

Over the course of almost 40 years Vantage has built expertise in the development, production and supply of environmentally friendly cosmetic ingredients through green, sustainable practices. It began in the 1970s when founders of the Desert Whale Jojoba Company promoted jojoba oil as a unique plant-derived replacement for highly valued sperm whale oil — playing a key role in the introduction and growth of the jojoba industry, and assisting in the “Save the Whales” environmental movement.

“The Desert Whale brand has a proud heritage in helping to save the whales by offering jojoba oil as a replacement for sperm whale oil in the 1970s. Today, the brand is building upon this heritage in helping to save our rivers, lakes, oceans and marine life by offering a complete line of natural jojoba exfoliants as replacements for PE beads” said Michael Young, Director of Desert Whale Jojoba Oil & Derivatives at Vantage. “We have come full circle, working to save the very oceans that are inhabited by the whales we helped to save.”

Reliable Supply of Desert Whale Jojoba from Vantage

Vantage is the largest jojoba grower and producer of jojoba products, offering a wide range of Desert Whale Jojoba oil and derivatives in addition to natural jojoba exfoliants. We are the only vertically- integrated supplier owning every step in the supply chain, from farming to oil extraction to derivatives manufacturing. This is part of our ongoing commitment to providing security of supply and reliable service. In fact, with a farm already operating in Arizona Vantage recently acquired a majority share in Agrinsa, one of the world’s largest jojoba farms in Argentina. As a result, we’ve expanded our growing capabilities and further secured supply from multiple sources of jojoba in regions with different growing seasons.
