Regulations are ever increasing and keeping up-to-date with all of them is very difficult. Across industries, federal agencies issue nearly 8,000 regulations per year (source: regulations.gov). The need to understand regulated or prohibited ingredients early in the development cycle is crucial.
For example, consider a formulator who has found the perfect ingredient functionality only to send it upstream and uncover that it is regulated in amounts greater than what has been specified. Situations like this can greatly impact innovation and supply chain efficiency. Imagine the amount of time saved if they had known the regulatory parameters earlier.
We’ve heard this from formulators, and as a result we have met the need for obtaining regulatory information. It is now available in UL Prospector to help formulators in personal care and cosmetics efficiently create safe products for their customers.
Regulatory Profiles, the first of many assessment tools from UL, are now available on thousands of product pages.
Key Features and Benefits Include:
- Formulate faster and speed up innovation by accessing regulatory information at the start of ingredient searches.
- Increase supply chain efficiency by knowing potential compliance hurdles before formulating.
- Thousands of product profiles in Prospector include regulatory information with links to CAS number documents and associated regulatory websites and hotlists.
- Data is updated in Prospector quarterly and compiled directly from regulatory organizations.

I am pleased to learn about this helpful UL Prospector feature. Our formulation reports typically include CAS numbers, and until now we’ve had to look them up in the PCPC Cosmetic Ingredient Dictionary (often several different CAS #’s are listed). Additionally, it will be nice to have all the regulatory resources at my fingertips instead of chasing after that information at a later date.
Thank you for your note and positive feedback!
