From snail mucus-based face masks to starfish-infused face creams, South Korean cosmetics companies continue to create products formulated with ingredients that might raise an eyebrow or two. But they’re also raising money and lots of it for the K-beauty companies that develop them.

- A recent article on Bloomberg Business says “overseas sales of Korean cosmetics rose 66 percent this year through August.” The article cites the popularity of products containing exotic ingredients like snail slime and donkey milk with retailers like Urban Outfitters, Target and Sephora and attributes the growing demand to “American fashion magazines and beauty bloggers.”
- South Korean product developers are using the overabundance of starfish in the Pacific ocean to their advantage, says a Cosmetics Design-Asia article. Rich in collagen and calcium, starfish extract is “reported to hydrate, regenerate and rejuvenate the skin.”
- With Chinese tourism ramping back up in South Korea after an outbreak of MERS in May of 2015, K-beauty companies are expected to experience a healthy recovery, which is a “good opportunity for investors,” says a Korea Portal article. Chinese consumers are among the most avid fans of South Korean cosmetic products.
