Lucuma is a Peruvian fruit with a flavor profile that combines maple and sweet potato. Not only does this sound like the perfect addition to an autumn menu, but market research firm Mintel foresees major growth in the inclusion of lucuma in products for both its flavor and nutrient profiles. So far, Europe leads the way in new product launches containing lucuma.

- According to Food Navigator, key selling points for lucuma are its health benefits, flavor profile and potential use as a natural sweetener. “Whole lucuma powder can be used in ice-cream, baby foods, yoghurts, cakes, smoothies, chocolate bars and desserts” says the food media outlet.
- The Mintel blog lists the nutrients in lucuma: “antioxidants, fiber, vitamins & minerals, especially beta-carotene and other B vitamins.” It also notes studies that show lucuma may be beneficial for tissue regeneration, regulating blood sugar and promoting heart health.
- The lucuma flesh is “dry as a dessert” according to The Evening Standard. It’s usually sold in powder form, the texture of which is “similar to that of granulated sugar,” but tastes like brown sugar, says an article on The Huffington Post touting the superfruit.
