The world’s oceans aren’t just natural wonders. They’re also some of our greatest resources for ingredients for everything from food and supplements to personal care products and beyond. Sea-dwelling plants, animals and the ocean water itself are used by humans to live a healthier lifestyle.
One common health-promoting ingredient taken from sea life is fish oil (EU). The benefits of taking fish oil supplements, like reduced risk of coronary artery disease, are well known. And the variety of fish oil ingredients available is vast. But there are other ingredients, also found in the world’s oceans, that have been associated with improvements in health. These functional nutrients vary widely, from ingredients taken from the cartilage of sharks to minerals extracted from water found in the deep sea.
If you’re looking for outside-the-box functional ingredients for your formulations, look no further. The following is a list of just a few of the ocean-derived nutrients listed by suppliers in the Prospector search engine.

Thanks for the article. Although in some cases it might be necessary to harvest products from the ocean water or floorbed, I think the industry should not promote use of these natural products. Some are of dubious effectiveness and at best they will do the ecosystem (and thus ourselves) way more harm than they do good. We reallty don’t need sea cucumber extract and products alike. The future of the food and care industry really should lie in more creative and scientifically-sound products.
