Maintaining block resistance in a near-zero VOC formulation space is a key requirement for both interior and exterior topcoats. Rapid anti-block development allows a faster return to service after painting and reduces or eliminates inadvertent marring of freshly painted surfaces. This is especially true in high-traffic interior as well as exterior applications. Ultimate hardness is also a critical criterion for ultra-premium acrylic coatings, where high abrasion, washability and chemical resistance are needed.
Formulators often rely on the use of migrating species, including waxes and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), specifically fluorosurfactants, to achieve block resistance. Due to environmental and health concerns, PFAS have come under increased scrutiny by the USEPA and regulators around the world. This presentation will provide an overview of a new acrylic topcoat polymer, EPS 2786, capable of achieving same-day hot block resistance (50° C) within hours of being painted, without the use of intentionally added fluorosurfactants, and also offers:
- Exceptional exterior durability and dirt pickup resistance (DPUR)
- Exceptional same-day hot block resistance and fast hardness development
- Gloss retention in both accelerated QUV-A (ASTM G154) and natural exposure testing
- Washability and scrub resistance (ASTM D2486)
- High abrasion resistance
