Proteins, peptides and collagen can have a variety of benefits in skin and hair care formulas – but there are several things you need to consider when choosing which material you will include in your formula to get the best results. There is also a mounting pile of misinformation when it comes to choosing – and using – proteins, peptides and collagen for cosmetic formulas.
One of the first things you need to consider is the source. Is a natural or vegan philosophy important to your brand? There are fortunately loads of choices that are natural, vegan friendly or even synthetic, if this is not an issue, but they all work differently. The next consideration is size (molecular weight) and delivery system. A lot of people think the smaller the molecular weight, the deeper it penetrates… right? Wrong. It is not only the molecular weight but also your delivery system that matters. Sometimes you don’t need the protein or collagen to penetrate that deeply anyway to get the desired result. Higher molecular weight materials that adsorb to the skin or hair can be just as effective in some applications where film-forming or moisture protection is the preferred performance.
We often hear people say they don’t work in wash-off products, right? Wrong again! There are many materials that show great substantivity and adsorption even at low inputs over repeated wash-off applications. In other words, choose the right grade of material, and you’ll get fantastic results even in wash-off products. We’ve even read that they shouldn’t be charged, otherwise they won’t work… wrong again! Some hydrolyzed proteins actually work better when they have been charged because of their added performance benefits.
In this video, Belinda Carli, Director of Institute of Personal Care Science, explores everything protein, peptide and collagen related – how to make the best selections for your formulas, what information to look for when researching the many protein, peptide and collagen choices available, and which ones work best when charged or wash-off products. She also explores the many performance benefits of these materials at various sizes, including collagens and peptides.

Oh my God! It’s really great to discover that peptide-based cosmetic products can be beneficial for our skin as well. This reminds me of my niece who’s going to attend her high school reunion next month and she wants to look radiant. I’ll forward this article to her so she’ll make the right purchase very soon.
Fabulous..such good service.” Thank you… I have never had such good service.
Thank you, happy formulating!
Kind regards,
Belinda Carli
