Do you know to achieve carbon-neutral beauty, and lower the carbon footprint of your cosmetics and ingredients? Did you know that being a sustainable and biodegradable ingredient does not necessarily give it a low carbon footprint? In fact, many naturally derived ingredients have a significant carbon footprint that rarely gets checked, because so many people think natural and sustainable instantly qualifies the ingredient as having a low carbon footprint. In this video, Belinda Carli, Director of the Institute of Personal Care Science, explains how many naturally derived ingredients may not be as carbon neutral as first thought – and how these ingredients can then impact many of the cosmetic formulas we create!
Being carbon neutral or with a lower carbon footprint means minimizing the energy used in the creation of raw materials; whilst also limiting the amount of water used in the process and reducing the waste after processing has been completed. Standard esterification processes, used for many naturally derived ingredients, use high temperatures whilst also consuming considerable quantities of water and generating significant waste. Newer enzymatic esterification processes can dramatically reduce the temperature and times used in processing whilst reducing water and waste by-products.
She also looks at some innovative processing techniques companies can use when putting cosmetic formulations together, and where the carbon footprint of a cosmetic formula is really coming from.
How carbon neutral are your cosmetic formulas and materials really? Watch this video to get some amazing insight into the true carbon footprint of the natural materials you may have otherwise thought fit the carbon-neutral beauty trend – and how you can improve your formulas and material selections.
