Consumers are now more than ever aware of the ingredients being used in their food, and so too, their cosmetic products. Formulating vegan friendly and Halal certified products is a rapidly growing trend around the globe – and it’s not as difficult as you may think – if you understand the rules of what is permitted, and what is not. Formulating palm free cosmetics is much more difficult. While simply avoiding palm oil is easy to do, a lot of consumers and formulators are not aware of just how extensively palm oil derivatives are used in the personal care industry. From glycerine, to emulsifiers and even antioxidants and surfactants – formulating without palm oil or its derivatives can pose a challenge to even experienced formulators.
So, exactly which ingredients in cosmetics are not vegan friendly, or not suitable in Halal products? Which ingredients may contain palm oil derivatives that you are not aware of? In this video, Belinda Carli, Director of Institute of Personal Care Science, goes through the ingredients that can be used in Vegan and Halal products, and which ingredients are not suitable to be used. She also goes through common cosmetic ingredients derived from palm without any sort of palm indication in the INCI name – and many of these are important for stability, viscosity and performance! She also covers trends of what is okay to use, but may not be accepted, by these consumer groups; as well as the types of ingredients these consumers have a preference for.
You’ll also see Belinda put together a beautiful, totally natural cream using vegan and Halal friendly ingredients and avoiding palm oil and its derivatives. She’ll talk you through how to investigate ingredient origins properly and overcome stability and performance issues when formulating to these particular needs. Watch this video today to find out how to make vegan friendly, Halal suitable and palm free emulsions!
