As carmakers work to bring EV charging closer to parity with ICE vehicle refueling, EV power and charging infrastructure are climbing toward higher voltages. The material challenge becomes one of providing high temperature resistance and excellent electrical properties without sacrificing strength or adding weight.
Ascend Performance Materials’ Starflam® 525K and 525H rise to that challenge by offering best-in-class relative temperature index (RTI), high comparative tracking index (CTI) and a UL94 V-0 rating at 0.2 mm, while also bringing the reliable specific strength and processability of polyamide 66. The two non-halogenated flame-retardant grades are color stable, REACH and RoHS compliant, and have wide processing windows.
But Starflam does more than provide safety during normal operation. Lithium-ion battery failures turn catastrophic when a battery malfunction produces enough heat to trigger thermal runaway. Enter Starflam X-Protect. Thermal runaway poses a spectacular safety risk to passengers with temperatures often exceeding 900°C very quickly and for a sustained duration.
Starflam X-Protect withstands over 15 minutes of exposure to open flames that exceed 1100°C, outlasting standard FR PA66 and aluminum. Starflam X-Protect provides enough time for EV passengers to reach safety during a catastrophic failure without adding weight during normal operation.
In this webinar, Dr. Kim White and Mr. Kai Becker from Ascend Performance Materials will discuss how the two Starflam 525 grades and X-Protect meet the increasing safety and efficiency demands needed to remove some of the last obstacles to widespread EV adoption.
